I have been posting about the current affairs of the Canadian soccer association and it's inability to fulfill its mandate as a soccer organization. Last night Canada's U23 team was tasked with playing Mexico in order to become one of two teams to qualify from Concacaf to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. For Canada this almost seems impossible.
But last night this intrepid and oft neglected bunch pull off a 3rd minute stunner by Will Johnson giving the Canucks a quick 1 nil lead. The lead held for twenty minutes when Mexico were awarded a penalty and capitalized off the foot of Luis Angel Landin.
The second half saw both Mexico and Canada's goal scorers sent off with booking offesnses. Mexico were down to 10 men first when Mexican goal scorer Landin was yellow carded for the second time and the Canada's Will Johnson was given a straight red card minutes later.
So the result is a 1-1 draw for Canada in arguably its toughest game of the round. Context is everything so this result under the circumstances is fantastic. Great job to Nick Dasovic and his intrepid Canucks. Canada faces Haiti tomorrow night,March 14 2008 game time is 8;00pm. I will try to catch it on ESPN 360 or ESPN deportes.
